Engineered wood floors are usually 2, 3 or even 5 thin wood sheets which are laminated together to form one plank. These types of floors range in 1/4" to 9/16" in thickness, and from 2 1/4" to 7" in width. Usually the lengths vary in range from 12" - 60" in length. The top of the finished layer may be cut from a diversity of domestic and exotic hardwood. During the building of planned wood floors, wood piles are loaded on top of each other but in the conflicting directions. This will create a wooden floor that is ranged constant and is also less affected by humidity than a 3/4" wood floor. This means that you can post these floors above concrete pieces in basements and anywhere else in the home.
Wood is expected to swell in certain directions. In the attendance of wetness, solid wood planks will expand across the size of the planks, slightly down the span of the boards. This is an avoidable problem; many manufacturers of constructed planks will place each piece of wood in the opposed way of each other. This is a process that is called cross-ply construction. When the wood layers are glued together the plies will respond with each other and will halt the plank from growing or shrinking when humidity changes. With that said, if wetness is a worry, you need to select constructed flooring instead of a solid strip. This is because, constructed wood floors are made up of a number of layers of wood. All of these are glued together so it is possible to change the top finish layer to a different wood species. You can choose from an assortment of national and exotic hardwoods.
Many constructed floors can be glued down, stapled down, nailed down, or floated over with a wide array of subfloors, these may include some different types of existing flooring. You may also buy constructed floors in varying widths. They typically arise in 2 1/4", 3", 5", and 7" sizes. These widths can be mixed, for instance, 3-5-7 inch planks can be fitted side by side. If you can vary the board widths, the you may change the total look of the floor.
